Dibrugarh’s ‘Swachh Gali’ Initiative Transforms Lanes with Colour and Community Spirit

The Swachh Gali (Clean Lanes) initiative, a collaborative effort between the Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC) and the NGO Team Shrishti, is gaining remarkable momentum, successfully achieving 100% waste collection and segregation in several wards while promoting a powerful sense of community ownership.

The movement recently saw a vibrant burst of creativity in Atecol Gali, where volunteers from Team Shrishti, interns from Dibrugarh University, and local residents joined forces on Monday to transform plain lane walls into beautiful Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) murals. The project became a true family affair, with children enthusiastically adding their colourful hand and thumbprints to the artwork, symbolising the community’s collective stake in a cleaner, more inspiring neighbourhood.

This spirit of engagement is spreading rapidly. Residents of Wards 15, 21, and 8—covering areas such as G.S. Modi Road Gali, Boloram Dowerah Path, and Dalbir Singh Lohar Path—have also taken up brooms and cleaning materials to spruce up their own lanes. To support the effort, dustbins were distributed to households in Boloram Dowerah Path, reinforcing the practice of door-to-door waste collection. The establishment of regular weekend cleaning sessions has further cemented active participation.

Commenting on the initiative’s success, Dibrugarh Mayor Dr Saikat Patra said, “Dibrugarh’s Swachh Gali initiative is a testament to how collective action can lead to lasting transformation—one gali at a time. It is heartening to see residents, especially the youth and children, taking such strong ownership.”
