Assam’s first state-of-the-art fish market was inaugurated in Jorhat on Wednesday, marking a major step toward modernising the region’s local commerce and ensuring hygienic trading practices. The newly built, three-storied complex, constructed at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore, was formally inaugurated by Jorhat MLA and former Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, Hitendra Nath Goswami, in the presence of District Commissioner Jay Shivani, Jorhat Municipal Board Chairperson Lakhimi Khargharia, and hundreds of citizens.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Goswami described the project as a “landmark development in Assam’s retail infrastructure.” He said, “This is the first scientifically designed modern fish market in the state, built to benefit everyone — from wholesalers to small-scale fish sellers. Our aim is to ensure that both sellers and customers can conduct their business in a clean, convenient, and organised environment.”
The three-storied fish market has been built with modern amenities including a lift facility, proper drainage, and separate designated areas for wholesale and retail operations. The layout is designed to maintain hygiene and accessibility while reducing congestion in the town’s busy commercial zones.
Goswami said that the new centralised market will bring together scattered fish traders from various parts of Jorhat under one roof, creating both economic efficiency and better customer experience.“Jorhat is known for its rich fish culture and vibrant local economy. With this modern market, we are taking a step toward sustainable urban development while also providing dignity and improved livelihood to the local fish-sellers,” Goswami said.

Chairperson of the Jorhat Municipal Board, Lakhimi Khargharia said that the market’s operation and maintenance will be closely monitored by the municipal body to ensure cleanliness and proper functioning.
District Commissioner Jay Shivani praised the initiative, calling it a remarkable example of how traditional trading sectors can be revitalised through modern infrastructure. “This modern marketplace represents the vision of a cleaner and more organised Jorhat,” he said.
The Jorhat MLA further announced that two new two-storied vegetable markets will soon be constructed in the town as part of a larger urban modernisation plan.“Our goal is to make Jorhat town free from roadside vegetable vendors by providing them dedicated spaces with better facilities,” Goswami said while adding that the construction of these vegetable markets will begin early next year.
