Dibrugarh University Launches Japanese Language Classes Under CM-FLIGHT Scheme

Dibrugarh University, in collaboration with Mirai Japanese Learning Centre, commenced Japanese language classes on Monday for the first batch of 35 students enrolled under the Assam Chief Minister’s Foreign Language Initiative for Global Human Talent (CM-FLIGHT) Scheme for 2025–26.

The collaboration was earlier formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on September 13 between Dibrugarh University and Mirai Japanese Learning Centre. The partnership aims to introduce tailored Japanese language courses enabling students to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in Japanese-speaking markets.

“This collaboration with Mirai is a significant milestone for Dibrugarh University, marking a step forward in our commitment to offering world-class opportunities and education for our students,” Dibrugarh University Vice-Chancellor Prof Jiten Hazarika said.

The CM-FLIGHT Scheme is an Assam government initiative designed to prepare youth for overseas employment through foreign language and skill training. The pilot programme focuses on Japan, providing Japanese language training and job placement support under Japan’s Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) visa program. The scheme targets high-demand sectors including construction, nursing care, food service, hospitality, healthcare, manufacturing, and food processing.

“Our aim is to create a direct pathway for students, not only to learn the language but also to secure jobs in diverse sectors. Learning Japanese will provide students with a deeper understanding of Japan’s rich culture, improving cross-cultural collaboration. With Japan actively seeking skilled professionals, this initiative is poised to significantly enhance employability prospects for students from Assam,” said a Mirai representative.

The scheme offers substantial financial assistance, with the government covering significant training costs and providing additional support for post-placement relocation and visa processing. Applicants must be permanent residents of Assam, aged between 18 and 45 years, medically fit, and possess relevant skills and education.

The Mirai Japanese Learning Centre guarantees 100 percent placement opportunities in Japanese-based companies, giving students a competitive edge in securing high-paying positions abroad.

The initiative is expected to strengthen Indo-Japan collaboration, enhance Assam’s economy through remittances and skill transfer, and expand to other countries and languages in subsequent phases.
