Dr Jyoti Prasad Hatibaruah, a retired Veterinary Officer from Dibrugarh, Assam, has brought immense glory to the country by winning a remarkable haul of eight medals—three gold, two silver, and three bronze—at the recently concluded Asian Open & Masters Classic and Equipped Championship 2025 in Istanbul, Turkiye.

Competing against nearly 300 participants from 26 nations, Dr Hatibaruah delivered an outstanding performance that saw him secure the prestigious title of 2nd Best Lifter of Asia in the Equipped Masters 3 category. His total lift of 437.5 kg across the events highlighted his mastery and dedication to the sport.

Dr Hatibaruah’s achievement marks a historic moment for Assam, as he becomes the first male powerlifter from the state to secure an Asian medal. Associated with Powerlifting and Weightlifting since 1985, he attributed his foundation to his late mentor, Ajit Baishya, Assam’s first Weightlifting NIS coach.

Upon his remarkable victory, the Assam Powerlifting Association extended its congratulations. Raj Kumar Das, President of the association, said, “Dr Hatibaruah’s commitment is truly inspiring. Winning 8 medals at the Asian level at his age is a testament to perseverance. We are incredibly proud of his achievement and the pride he has brought to Assam.”

Secretary Anupam Sharma added, “His performance, culminating in the 2nd Best Lifter award, is a monumental feat. We hope his success will motivate the next generation of powerlifters in the region.”
