Abhijit Gurav, an IPS officer of the 2014 batch Assam-Meghalaya cadre, assumed charge as the new Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Dibrugarh district on Monday, succeeding Rakesh Reddy who has been transferred to Hojai district as SSP.
Gurav, who was previously serving as SSP of neighbouring Tinsukia district, was accorded a warm welcome at the SSP office upon taking charge of his new posting. The transfer marks a lateral move for the officer within the upper Assam region, bringing his experience from Tinsukia to address law and order challenges in Dibrugarh.
The outgoing SSP, Reddy, has been reassigned to lead the Hojai district police force. During his tenure in Dibrugarh, Reddy oversaw various law enforcement initiatives and maintained the district’s security apparatus.
Gurav’s appointment comes at a crucial time for the district, which serves as a commercial and educational hub for upper Assam. As an officer with prior experience in the region, he is expected to leverage his familiarity with local dynamics and challenges to strengthen police operations and community relations.

The 2014 batch IPS officer’s tenure in Tinsukia provided him with valuable insights into the socio-economic and security landscape of upper Assam, experience that will prove beneficial in his new role. Dibrugarh, being one of Assam’s key districts, requires robust policing strategies to address both urban and rural security concerns.
A decorated officer, Gurav was conferred with the President’s Medal for Gallantry (PMG) during Republic Day this year.
District officials and police personnel extended their greetings to the new SSP, expressing confidence in his leadership and experience. The smooth transition of command ensures continuity in police operations and ongoing investigations across the district.
Gurav’s priorities in his new role are expected to include maintaining law and order, strengthening community policing initiatives, and addressing emerging security challenges facing the district.
