Sonowal Urges Media to Uphold Ethics and Credibility at Tinsukia District Journalists’ Conference

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal urged the media to step up its role in social awareness through ethical, constructive, and committed journalism. He was speaking at the golden jubilee valedictory programme and the 24th biennial conference of the Tinsukia District Journalists’ Association (TDJA) in Doomdooma on Saturday.

Describing the media as the fourth pillar of democracy, the Union Minister affirmed its crucial role in society. “From its inception, the media has borne the responsibility of safeguarding the fundamental rights of citizens,” Sarbananda Sonowal said, expressing confidence that this tradition will continue. He noted that a healthy society thrives on coordination and balance, a message the media is essential in conveying.

The Minister put a strong emphasis on the value of constructive criticism in a democracy, noting that public life demands accountability. “When we accept social responsibility, we need someone to watch over us,” Sonowal said. He stressed that the conduct of public figures must be responsible, and a vigilant media is necessary to correct shortcomings.

In a notably candid remark about feedback, Sonowal stated, “I always welcome criticism and remain cautious of praise — because there is no certainty in praise, but sincerity lies in criticism.” He added that the watchful eye of the media on those in public life helps to ensure integrity.

Sonowal also addressed the challenges posed by the digital age, warning that the surge of social media has contributed to a decline in social values. This places an increased responsibility on traditional media to uphold ethics and credibility. He advised that while science and technology influence every part of life, their impact must remain positive.

“Economic growth achieved by damaging the environment is never desirable,” Sonowal stated, stressing that humanity and technology must move together to ensure a healthy future.Recalling the legacy of Lachit Borphukan, the Minister urged students and youth to develop broad excellence in this era of competition. “In the 21st century, our students must demonstrate competence in all areas,” he said, setting the goal to build an Assamese society that proves its excellence globally.
