DGP Reviews Security Arrangements Ahead of PM Modi’s Dec 21 Namrup Visit

Assam Director General of Police Harmeet Singh on Saturday reviewed security and logistical arrangements in Namrup ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposed visit on December 21, when he is scheduled to lay the foundation stone of a Rs 11,000-crore Brownfield Ammonia-Urea fertiliser project. The high-level review meeting focused on security deployment, traffic and crowd management, and coordination among civil, police, and other agencies to ensure the visit passes off smoothly.

The meeting was attended by Naharkatia MLA Taranga Gogoi, Dibrugarh Senior Superintendent of Police Abhijit Gurav, and senior officials of Assam Valley Fertilizers & Chemical Company Limited (AVFCL) and Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited (BVFCL), the host entities for the upcoming complex. Officials discussed route planning, emergency response measures, and communication protocols for the mega public rally where the Prime Minister is going to address a large gathering of people from across upper Assam.

Prime Minister Modi will visit Namrup to lay the foundation stone for the Brownfield Ammonia-Urea Complex, designed with an annual production capacity of 12.7 lakh metric tonnes of urea within the existing BVFCL premises. The project, with an estimated cost of around Rs 11,000 crore, is being described by officials as a critical intervention to boost fertiliser availability in the Northeast and eastern India while reducing dependence on imports.

“All arrangements are being fine-tuned to ensure the Prime Minister’s programmes in Namrup are conducted in a safe, seamless and people-friendly manner,” DGP Harmeet Singh said, while directing field officers to maintain “flawless coordination” between police, district administration and organisers.

Local representatives have welcomed the project as a major opportunity for economic transformation in the region. “The new ammonia-urea complex will not only strengthen Assam’s agricultural backbone but also open up substantial avenues for industrial growth and employment for our youth,” Naharkatia MLA Taranga Gogoi said, expressing confidence that Namrup will emerge as a key fertiliser hub for the Northeast.
