Goa Nightclub Fire Kills 25, Including Four Tourists and 14 Staff

A terrifying blaze, believed to have originated from exploding LPG cylinders, tragically killed 25 people at the popular nightclub, Birch by Romeo Lane, in Arpora, North Goa, during the early hours of Sunday. The catastrophic incident, which unfolded just past midnight, has triggered a massive government inquiry into safety compliance.

In an official statement, Goa Police confirmed the high death toll and provided a breakdown of the victims: “A massive fire broke out at Birch by Romeo Lane in Arpora, North Goa, resulting in 25 deaths, out of whom 4 confirmed to be tourists, 14 were staff members, and the identity of 07 is yet to be established.”

The staff members were predominantly trapped in the club’s basement, with officials stating that while three victims succumbed to severe burn injuries, the overwhelming majority died from smoke inhalation. Six individuals sustained injuries and are currently undergoing treatment.

The establishment, constructed of highly combustible material, saw the fire spread rapidly. The fact that many staff members were working in the basement area meant they had little time to escape the fire that preliminary findings suggest started on the ground floor.

The disaster has ignited outrage and swift political action. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the site and expressed profound grief, calling it a “very painful day for all of us in Goa.” He swiftly ordered an inquiry to determine the exact cause of the fire and to thoroughly examine whether the club adhered to fire safety norms and building rules.

Sawant promised “the most stringent action under the law” against any found responsible, including club management and officials who might have allowed the establishment to operate despite apparent violations.

The Chief Minister noted that the nightclub was already “operating on the borderlines of the law,” having been served a demolition notice that was subsequently stayed on appeal.

Local MLA Michael Lobo echoed the safety concerns, calling for an urgent audit of all air-conditioned clubs and restaurants in Goa, emphasizing the importance of safety for both patrons and workers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his condolences via social media. The identification process for the deceased is underway as police and fire department investigations continue, focusing on the potential negligence that led to one of Goa’s deadliest accidents.
