Assam’s Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika on Thursday assured residents of Baghjan in Tinsukia district of a permanent anti-erosion solution, announcing plans to deploy advanced ‘Mega Tube’ technology to tame the Brahmaputra’s destructive channels.
The Minister conducted a firsthand inspection of the site where the Brahmaputra and its tributary, Ananta Nallah, have been eroding land and threatening communities. He was accompanied by Sadiya MLA Bolin Chetia, Moran Autonomous Council CEM Arunjyoti Moran, and department officials.

Hazarika identified two specific river channels responsible for the erosion and outlined the technical intervention. “Two channels of the Brahmaputra are creating erosion in the Baghjan area. We will plug these channels using mega tubes so that the river water cannot cause erosion here. I assure locals that I will take all necessary steps for the long-term protection of this area,” he stated.

The ‘mega tube’ method involves filling large geotextile containers with sediment to create durable, submerged barriers that divert water flow. The minister cited a recent success story from nearby Kordoiguri village to bolster confidence. “Four months ago, we plugged two intrusive channels there with this same technology. After that, water has not entered the village. This proven technique will bring relief to Baghjan as well,” Hazarika said.

He linked the immediate measure to a larger, ongoing Asian Development Bank (ADB)-funded anti-erosion project in the region. While the comprehensive project is underway, a critical 1.5-km stretch for Baghjan’s protection awaits final sanction. The minister assured that this approval would be secured promptly to ensure a complete solution.
