Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Saturday jointly launched a landmark Rs 300-crore project to transform Sohra in Meghalaya into a world-class, sustainable tourism circuit. The ambitious initiative, funded under the PM-DevINE scheme, marks a significant investment in the ecological and economic future of the renowned destination.
The ‘Integrated Development of the Sohra Tourism Circuit’ will see a comprehensive overhaul of the area’s key attractions. Under the circuit, the following projects will be undertaken: a new Sohra Experiential and Cultural Centre; development of the Nohkalikai Falls Precinct Area; upgradation of Mawsmai Eco Park; development of Shella River Side; Nohsngithiang Falls and street scape improvement; upgradation of Wahkaliar Canyon Viewpoint; and precinct improvements at Mawsmai Cave, Arwah Cave, and the Wah Kaba Falls area.

Speaking at the launch, Scindia emphasised the project’s broader vision. “These projects are going to transform livelihoods and create opportunities for local communities,” he stated. He framed the initiative as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to the Northeast, declaring that the developed circuit would set a new standard.
“These world-class projects will give Sohra a new identity — not just as a tourist destination, but as a benchmark for responsible tourism across India.”

Echoing the sentiment, Chief Minister Sangma hailed the project as a transformative moment for the state.
“This project is a game changer for the state’s tourism sector. It is about realising a vision to build world-class, sustainable tourist destinations,” Sangma said.

He assured that the government would ensure the project’s timely implementation, highlighting its potential to create jobs and elevate Meghalaya’s profile.
The ministers confirmed that the project is complemented by major connectivity upgrades, including the upcoming Shillong-Silchar Greenfield Expressway, which is expected to funnel more visitors to the newly revitalised Sohra circuit.
