The Indian Army’s Spear Corps organized the Siang Open Mini Marathon at the scenic village of Tuting in Upper Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday, paying tribute to the brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice during the 1962 Battle of Kepang La. The event served as a precursor to Kepang La Day, observed on November 17.
The marathon, themed “Siang Mini Marathon” to commemorate “Kepang La Day,” witnessed enthusiastic participation from over 517 individuals, including personnel from the Indian Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and local residents comprising school children, women, and youth.

Participants competed in two categories—2 km and 7 km—traversing the stunning terrain of the Siang Valley, demonstrating remarkable fitness and patriotic spirit.Beyond being a sporting event, the Mini Marathon represented unity, remembrance, and civil-military harmony. Tuting, situated in India’s easternmost frontier, exemplifies national resilience and community spirit. Through this initiative, the Indian Army reinforced its dedication to promoting friendship, fitness, and solidarity among border communities while honoring the martyrs of the 1962 conflict.

“The Siang Mini Marathon is not merely a tribute but also a powerful reminder of the unwavering courage and sacrifice of soldiers who fought valiantly to defend the nation’s honor at Kepang La,” a senior Army official said, commending the participants for their energy and determination.
The event concluded with a felicitation ceremony where winners across various categories received medals, certificates, and cash prizes. The enthusiastic participation of local youth and women drew particular appreciation, reflecting the growing culture of sports and fitness in border regions.

“This marathon symbolises our enduring commitment to nation-building and fostering harmony among the people of the frontier,” an Army spokesperson stated, highlighting the initiative’s broader objectives.
Under Operation Sadbhavana, the Indian Army continues implementing numerous initiatives in Arunachal Pradesh to promote education, healthcare, and sports. The Siang Mini Marathon stands as another testament to the Army’s dedication to community development and national integration.
The event concluded on a deeply patriotic note with resounding chants of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Jai Hind,” as participants and spectators departed with renewed pride, unity, and gratitude toward the heroes whose valor continues to inspire a strong and united nation.
