In a spectacular display of skill and teamwork, Maijan Tea Estate stormed to victory in the Assam Company Gold Cup football tournament 2025, defeating Kondoli Tea Estate by a resounding 6-0 margin. The final, held at the grounds of the Thanai Tea Estate in Dibrugarh, marked a triumphant return for competitive football in the region, organised by one of India’s most historic corporate entities.
The match was dominated from the outset by Maijan, who showcased extraordinary skills. Imran Karmakar opened the scoring for his team just five minutes into the game, setting the pace for a one-sided affair. The attacking force was relentless, with Abhinash Murah netting an impressive two goals. Teammates Sajan Karmakar, Sumon Gowala, and Rohan Murah each added a goal to the tally, sealing a decisive 6-0 victory.
The tournament, featuring all 14 of the company’s gardens, was organised specifically to revive the long-standing football culture within the tea garden communities. This initiative is backed by a legacy steeped in history. Established in 1839, Assam Company India Ltd. is recognised as the world’s first tea plantation company, a pioneer in establishing tea estates and the first to brand and export Indian tea globally.

A spokesperson for the company connected this rich heritage to the modern-day event, stating, “Ever since its foundation in 1839, Assam Company has been leading tea production in India, creating a rich heritage that we take much pride in. We were awarded the Royal Charter by Her Majesty Queen Victoria in 1845, and one of our founding directors was Prince Dwarkanath Tagore, grandfather of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Reviving this football tradition is part of honouring our deep, century-old connection with the community.”
He further explained the motivation behind the tournament, noting, “Football in the tea gardens of Assam is very popular, but the craze had diminished in recent years because no such tournament had been organised. We took this initiative to rekindle that passion.”
The resounding success of the tournament and Maijan’s dominant performance have undoubtedly injected new energy into the local football scene, successfully linking a vibrant community tradition with the enduring legacy of its corporate patron.
