Arunachal Deputy CM Honours 1962 War Heroes at Historic Helmet Top Memorial

Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, along with Cultural Affairs Minister Dasanglu Pul and other dignitaries recently paid rich tribute to the bravehearts who sacrificed their lives during the 1962 Indo-China War at Helmet Top, a historic battlefield located above 8,000 feet in Walong circle, Anjaw district, bordering China.

Helmet Top stands as a powerful reminder of extraordinary valour displayed by Indian soldiers who fought against overwhelming odds during the War. The site witnessed one of the most heroic last stands in Indian military history when Lt. Bikram Singh and his men defended a vital feature (Pt 2847 at West Ridge) dominating the Walong airfield and Brigade Headquarters.

During the fierce battle on November 16, 1962, approximately 300 Chinese soldiers broke through and surrounded the Indian defenses from three sides, with a cliff forming the fourth side. Despite being vastly outnumbered, Lt. Bikram Singh and his KUMAON Regiment soldiers fought valiantly until their ammunition was exhausted.

“He would hold on and would not withdraw,” Lt. Bikram Singh had messaged his superior officer over the wireless, a promise he fulfilled to the ultimate limit as his men fought well beyond their designated withdrawal time of 1100 hours.

The War Memorial at Helmet Post was originally constructed by 6 ASSAM Regiment in 1986. Captain JS Choudhary and the Pioneer Platoon played a crucial role in securing this vital location. During construction in December 1986, the Border Roads Organisation discovered the mortal remains of a soldier, followed by the discovery of 24 helmets on pickets, indicating the final resting place of the fallen heroes.

“I salute our jawans who guard our borders day and night despite the challenging terrain and for their unwavering commitment to the Nation,” the Arunachal Deputy CM said during his visit.

The memorial was recently renovated by 16 BIHAR Regiment to commemorate the 62nd Anniversary of the Battle of Walong in 2024, enhancing its aesthetic appeal while paying befitting homage to the martyrs. The structure stands proudly as a testament to the bravery and supreme sacrifice of Indian Army soldiers who defended the nation’s sovereignty during one of its most challenging periods.
