Trio of Dibrugarh colleges pay musical tribute to Zubeen Garg, Syed Saadulla

Three premier colleges of Dibrugarh – Dibrugarh Hanumanbux Surajmal Kanoi (DHSK) College (Autonomous), DHSK Commerce College and Manohari Devi Kanoi Girls’ (MDKG) College – came together on Tuesday to pay tribute to two recently deceased luminaries of Assam’s music industry, legendary singer Zubeen Garg and renowned artist Syed Saadulla. The inter-college condolence-cum-cultural meet also coincided with the 53rd birth anniversary of Zubeen Garg, adding an emotional edge to the proceedings.

The programme was inaugurated by DHSK College Principal Dr Sashi Kanta Saikia, who lit the ceremonial lamp in the presence of faculty, students and members of the three students’ unions. In his address, Dr Saikia said the united initiative by the youth reflected “the positive thinking of the new generation” at a time when societies are increasingly fragmented along narrow ethnic lines. He remarked, “If you want to be first in today’s competitive era, you have to go alone. If you want to succeed, everyone should move forward together, hand in hand,” underlining that the collaboration of the three students’ unions to honour the two artists was “a positive aspect of the students fraternity.”

Dr Saikia further observed that true music has the power to transcend divides. He noted, “If the melody is true, beautiful, dreamy, it can win people’s hearts and make people’s hearts beat,” adding that the voice and melody of Zubeen Garg had created the atmosphere that brought the three colleges together. He also announced that the institutions have formed a joint organisation named “TRICORN” to promote language, literature, culture, research and collaborative study among the campuses.

MDKG College Principal Dr Anupjyoti Bharali, thanked the presidents and secretaries of the three students’ unions, calling the initiative “the beginning of a far-reaching decision.” He expressed confidence that the colleges would “continue to work together for the betterment of society in an even stronger manner in the future.”

DHSK Commerce College Principal Dr Jaydev Gogoi praised the spirit of unity, stating that “unity is strength and division is weakness and this is good news for Assam.” He strongly endorsed TRICORN as a collective platform “to advance all aspects of society,” and urged students to carry the spirit of collaboration beyond the campus.

Teachers from all three colleges, office bearers of the students’ unions and hundreds of students were present at the meeting, which featured a rich line-up of songs and dances in memory of Zubeen Garg and Syed Saadulla. The cultural items, many of them inspired by the works of the two artistes, turned the solemn tribute into a celebration of Assam’s musical heritage.
