The stage is set for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic visit to the industrial town of Namrup on Sunday (December 21), where he will lay the foundation stone for a transformative Rs 11,000-crore Ammonia-Urea fertiliser project.
Following the high-profile inauguration of Guwahati’s nature-themed airport terminal on Saturday, the Prime Minister’s move to the heart of Upper Assam signals a major push toward industrial self-reliance. He will be joined by Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for the ceremony.

The landmark project is being developed by the Assam Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited (AVFCCL) and represents one of the most significant industrial investments in the region’s history. The Government of Assam holds the largest equity stake in the venture at 40 percent. This ambitious initiative is a collaborative effort involving major public sector players such as National Fertilizers Limited, Oil India Limited, and the Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited.

Once completed, the complex will have the capacity to produce 12.7 lakh metric tonnes of urea annually. This massive output is specifically designed to meet the entire fertiliser requirement of the North Eastern states, effectively ending the region’s dependency on supplies transported from other parts of India.
Preparations for the visit have been exhaustive, with a newly constructed temporary helipad already successfully tested for the Prime Minister’s arrival. Local authorities are preparing for a massive public gathering, with estimates suggesting that over 1.24 lakh people from across the region will attend the rally.

“We are expecting approximately 1.24 lakh people for the Prime Minister’s public rally at Namrup. All arrangements are being meticulously reviewed to ensure a smooth and successful event. Both the ceremony site and rally venue are ready to host the historic occasion,” State Industries and Commerce Minister Bimal Borah on Saturday said.
Beyond its agricultural benefits, the Rs 11,000-crore project is expected to act as a major economic catalyst, generating thousands of jobs and strengthening the industrial fabric of Assam. As the Prime Minister concludes his two-day visit to the state tomorrow, the foundation of the fertiliser project is going to stand as a cornerstone for the “Atmanirbhar” or self-reliant vision for the Northeast.
