The Sivasagar district administration has implemented a new one-way traffic system around the historic Borpukhuri lake, effective January 5, as part of measures to manage congestion during ongoing beautification works in the area.
The traffic regulation applies to Borpukhuri Paar, the periphery surrounding the centuries-old waterbody, and aims to ensure smoother vehicular movement while enhancing commuter safety during the project period.
Under the revised arrangement, vehicles must follow a designated route: Circuit House – PWD Office – District Jail – Piyali Phukan Udyan – Buddha Vihar. The administration has urged motorists to strictly adhere to traffic signage and extend full cooperation to traffic personnel deployed in the area.
Sivasagar District Development Commissioner (DDC) Pabitra Kumar Das said that the traffic arrangement will remain in effect until the beautification project reaches completion.
“This measure has been introduced to ease congestion and facilitate smooth traffic flow around Borpukhuri during the ongoing development works. We appeal to all motorists to follow the designated route and cooperate with traffic authorities to avoid any inconvenience,” Das stated.
The decision comes as the district administration undertakes beautification initiatives around one of Sivasagar’s most iconic landmarks. Borpukhuri, also known as Sivasagar Tank, holds immense historical and cultural significance as a testament to Assam’s rich Ahom heritage.
The massive man-made lake was constructed during the Ahom dynasty in 1734 by Queen Ambika. Spanning an impressive 120 acres (48.6 hectares) with a depth of 64 feet (19.5 metres), the waterbody represents the architectural prowess and urban planning capabilities of the Ahom rulers during the 18th century.
Located adjacent to the majestic Siva Dol—a towering Shiva temple also built in 1734—Borpukhuri forms part of a historic complex that draws tourists, pilgrims, and history enthusiasts from across the region and beyond.
The Siva Dol, standing as one of the tallest Shiva temples in India, together with the expansive tank, constitutes a major cultural landmark of Sivasagar town.
The beautification project aims to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the lake’s surroundings while preserving its historical character. The initiative is expected to boost tourism potential and provide better amenities for visitors exploring this heritage site.
Local residents and regular commuters have been advised to familiarise themselves with the new traffic pattern to ensure compliance and avoid confusion. The administration has assured that adequate signage and traffic management personnel will be deployed along the route to guide motorists.
