Sivasagar Gets New Solid Waste Management Plant

In a move to tackle urban pollution, a modern Solid Waste Management Plant and a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) Centre were inaugurated on Thursday at Borbil in the Amguri municipality of Assam’s Sivasagar district. The project was unveiled by Assam Housing & Urban Development and Public Health Engineering, Jayanta Mallabaruah

The event witnessed the presence of key officials including Sivasagar District Commissioner Aayush Garg, AMRUT Mission Director Sampriti Goswami, and municipal chairpersons Anamika Neog Baishya (Amguri), Mrinali Konwar (Sivasagar), and Pallabita Baruah Gohain (Demow).

Following the inauguration, Minister Mallabaruah planted a sapling and inspected the facility’s technical trial run. He emphasised the project’s role in transforming urban cleanliness, stating, “With the inauguration of this project… excellent and scientific waste disposal facilities have been made available, which will help keep the town clean and tidy.”

He further highlighted the project’s broader benefits, noting it would help free drains from plastic pollution and mitigate artificial floods. The minister also announced an upcoming Rs 14 crore clean drinking water project for Amguri under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme.

The new facility integrates two core systems for comprehensive waste management. The MRF Centre is designed to segregate recyclable materials like paper, plastic, glass, and metal from the general waste stream. Concurrently, the ‘Waste to Compost’ unit will process organic waste, converting it into nutrient-rich compost through decomposition to enhance soil fertility.

“These two projects will significantly help in directly reducing pollution,” the minister affirmed, mentioning the facility as a paradigm shift from traditional disposal to scientific, eco-friendly practices that promise a cleaner, more sustainable urban environment for the district.
