Sarbananda Sonowal hails Media as Democracy’s Sentinel

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, reaffirmed the media’s indispensable role as democracy’s fourth pillar on Saturday, urging journalists to uphold truth and ethics while navigating a rapidly changing information landscape.

Addressing the 17th Central Mid-Term Conference of the Assam Press Correspondents’ Union (APCU) in Tinsukia, he described journalists as vigilant sentinels and the authentic voice of the people.

“The role of the media as society’s conscious watchdog is immeasurable. As the voice of the people, journalists have consistently worked to protect freedom of speech and ensure accountability,” Sonowal stated.

He emphasised that the press carries a critical responsibility in safeguarding democratic values and must act as a bridge between the government and citizens, amplifying public concerns while promoting social harmony.

Highlighting the challenges of misinformation, the Minister called for responsible journalism rooted in credibility. “Journalism must prioritise truth and ethical reporting, resisting sensationalism,” he said, adding that the media should strengthen society through constructive engagement and dialogue.

Earlier in the day, Sonowal inaugurated welfare schemes at Makum and interacted with the beneficiaries of central government programmes. He praised the impact of flagship initiatives, stating, “Under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, development has reached the last mile, empowering beneficiaries and strengthening grassroots entrepreneurship.”

His itinerary also included the inauguration of a newly constructed Senior Citizens’ Office Bhawan in Panitola, built under the MPLADS scheme at a cost of Rs 15 lakh. Sonowal said the facility reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive development, ensuring dignity and support for the elderly.
