Sarbananda Sonowal Reviews Dibrugarh Airport Development, New Bengaluru Flight Announced

In a significant push to enhance air connectivity in upper Assam, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal chaired a crucial review meeting of the Airport Advisory Committee at Dibrugarh Airport on Monday evening, unveiling major development plans including a new flight to Bengaluru.

The meeting, attended by key officials including District Commissioner Bikram Kairi and Airport Director Bangajit Saha, focused on a comprehensive roadmap for the airport’s future, covering infrastructure, passenger amenities, and operational efficiency.

Airport Director Bangajit Saha announced that Akasa Air will commence flight services connecting Dibrugarh to Bengaluru via Bagdogra, starting February 1, 2026. The new route is set to bridge the region directly with a key southern metropolitan hub, boosting both economic and tourism prospects.

“Akasa Air is set to launch flight services between Dibrugarh and Bengaluru, via Bagdogra, starting February 1, 2026. This new route will provide a major impetus to both business travel and tourism,” Saha said.

Saha informed the committee that the newly constructed Air Traffic Control (ATC) building is now ready for commissioning. He also revealed that efforts are ongoing to introduce regular evening flight operations. “We are working to resolve a few technical requirements, after which we aim to start regular evening flights, providing more flexibility to passengers,” Saha added.

Presiding over the discussions, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal provided strategic directives on various developmental aspects, emphasising the need for international standards. He hailed the new initiatives as a transformative step for the region.

“The decisions taken today, including the new flight to Bengaluru and the state-of-the-art ATC, mark a significant leap in our mission to make Dibrugarh Airport a gateway of prosperity and connectivity for upper Assam,” Sonowal said.

The meeting concluded with a consensus to fast-track the development plans, signaling a new chapter of growth for air travel in the region.
