An unprecedented border encroachment issue emerged in Charaideo district of Assam near Sakho village on Monday, involving Nagaland’s territorial jurisdiction. The incident unfolded when a village council from Nagaland initiated construction of a cement gate approximately 40 metres inside Assam’s territory, close to the Assam-Nagaland boundary.
The encroachment was swiftly detected, prompting the Charaideo police team to intervene immediately. Officers formally instructed the Nagaland village council to cease all construction activities and relocate the gate strictly within Nagaland’s territorial limits, ensuring adherence to established inter-state boundaries.

Charaideo SSP Surjeet Singh Panesar confirmed the incident and praised the cooperative response from Nagaland authorities.
“Demonstrating cooperation and respect for established boundaries, the council dismantled the gate within six hours and began reconstructing it at the appropriate location,” he stated.
Notably, the incident occurred in a remote area devoid of any nearby habitation, highlighting the challenges and importance of maintaining clear inter-state boundaries even in sparsely populated zones. Such areas, despite their remoteness, require constant monitoring to prevent inadvertent or deliberate boundary violations that could escalate into larger disputes.
Border disputes between Assam and Nagaland have been a longstanding issue, with several areas along the 512-kilometre boundary remaining contentious. However, both state governments have been working towards amicable solutions through bilateral discussions and adherence to established protocols.
