Lakhimpur Police marks milestone with 100th Drug Raid

The Lakhimpur police achieved a significant milestone in its ongoing fight against drug trafficking on Wednesday, completing its 100th raid under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The latest operation resulted in the arrest of two drug peddlers and the recovery of 25.35 grams of heroin, highlighting the district’s sustained efforts to combat the narcotics menace.

Lakhimpur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gunendra Deka said, “This is our 100th drugs bust, which reflects the high operational tempo we have maintained to clean up the district. More than 200 drug peddlers and drug smugglers have been arrested and booked under the NDPS Act and are undergoing trials.”

The successive raids have led to the seizure of huge quantities of various narcotics, including heroin, brown sugar, and marijuana. These seized drugs are systematically removed from circulation through incineration, a procedure that ensures their complete destruction. This critical step is executed periodically under Section 52-A of the NDPS Act, guaranteeing that all necessary legal and procedural protocols are strictly observed.

The procedure for destruction is meticulously conducted in the presence of the District Drug Disposal Committee. This committee plays a crucial role in overseeing such operations, ensuring the entire process maintains the highest levels of transparency and adherence to legal requirements. Before proceeding with the destruction, officials diligently preserve necessary samples for ongoing investigations and court proceedings, maintaining the integrity of all legal evidence.

The SSP revealed that in July alone, Lakhimpur police destroyed drugs worth Rs 2,94,25,60, predominantly comprising heroin and marijuana recovered during various operations across the district.
