Home Minister Amit Shah to Inaugurate Assam’s Batadrava Project on Dec 29

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to inaugurate the completed Batadrava Project in Assam’s Nagaon District on December 29, marking a significant milestone in the cultural and religious preservation of Assam. Batadrava is the revered birthplace of the 15th-century Neo-Vaishnavite saint-reformer, Srimanta Sankardeva.

The development and beautification initiative, sanctioned at a cost of Rs 188 crore, aims to transform Batadrava Than (monastery) into a major religious and cultural tourism destination. Shah had earlier laid the foundation stone for the ambitious project on February 25, 2021.

The expansive project covers an area of 67 acres and includes creating comprehensive facilities for art, culture, research, and spiritualism, fulfilling a core agenda of the state government to restore the glory of the sacred site and protect its land from encroachment.

Ahead of the inauguration, state Cabinet ministers Keshab Mahanta and Pijush Hazarika visited the site on Saturday to take stock of the final progress and review arrangements for the Union Minister’s visit.

Speaking after the review, Minister Keshab Mahanta said, “The Batadrava Than project is a heartfelt tribute to Srimanta Sankardeva. We are ensuring every detail is perfect for the inauguration of this iconic memorial.”

The completion of the project is seen as a major success for the state government, fulfilling its commitment to promote the rich heritage of the region and establish Batadrava as a centre of profound cultural and spiritual significance.
