The spirit of compassion for stray animals shone brightly on Sunday as the Animal Welfare People (AWP) held its 8th Winter Adoption Camp in Dibrugarh. The event, marked by an encouraging turnout, saw numerous residents step forward to offer abandoned dogs and other animals a second chance at a loving home.
The movement began in 2018, pioneered by the late Dibrugarh-based youth and passionate animal lover, Vineet Bagaria, affectionately known as the ‘Dog Father’. Even during the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown, Vineet tirelessly fed and cared for countless strays, inspiring a generation of young volunteers who eventually formed AWP.
The adoption camp commenced with heartfelt floral tributes paid to Vineet Bagaria, renowned singer Zubeen Garg, and social worker Syed Sadullah, honouring their commitment to public welfare.
AWP President Gayatri Hazarika spoke about the organization’s mission and its roots in Vineet’s dedication. “Vineet began this movement in 2018 with the dream that every stray animal should find a home and never go hungry. After his passing, the young volunteers of AWP are determined to carry his legacy forward. This adoption camp is our humble tribute to him.”
The volunteers stressed that the camp was more than just an adoption drive, it was a heartfelt tribute to Vineet’s lifelong service. Vineet’s family, including his father Kailash Bagaria and his wife, continue to guide the organisation, ensuring his mission carries on with renewed strength.
The strong community support witnessed at the camp, with several adoptions finalised, reflected a growing sensitivity towards animal welfare in Dibrugarh. The organisers concluded the event with a commitment to fulfilling Vineet’s vision: ensuring “no stray animal remains homeless or hungry.”
