Dibrugarh University Hosts Landmark India-Taiwan Soft Power Summit

Dibrugarh University on Wednesday began a key international conference to explore the depth of India-Taiwan relations through shared history, trade, and cultural diplomacy. The inaugural session of the ‘100 Years of Tea, Trade and Ties: The Soft Power confluences in India-Taiwan Relations’ conference was convened on Wednesday, marking a strong collaborative endeavor between DU, the Centre for East Asian Studies (CEAS) at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre (TECC) in India.

The three-day event, running from December 3 to 5, was formally inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor of Dibrugarh University, Prof Jiten Hazarika.

“This conference marks a significant milestone in promoting deeper academic and cultural exchanges between India and Taiwan, utilising the rich tapestry of tea as our common thread. By focusing on our shared heritage in tea, we are laying a foundation for more resilient economic and diplomatic partnerships,” Prof Hazarika stated in his inaugural address.

The theme of robust academic collaboration was a key focus. Prof Sandip K Mishra and Dr Aravind Yelery from JNU highlighted the potential of such joint initiatives to deepen scholarly understanding of East Asian dynamics. “Our collaboration is vital for exploring the nuanced ‘soft power’ dynamics, especially in East Asian studies, where India and Taiwan share historical and economic interests that go beyond mere politics,” the JNU representatives noted.

Faculty from the host institution, Prof Surajit Borkotokey and Prof Pankaj Chetia, reinforced the importance of the primary topic, stressing tea’s fundamental role in local life, economy, and culture.

Jill Lai from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre (TECC) in India concluded the session by focusing on Taiwan’s dedication to expanding international academic outreach. Lai articulated the long-term vision for these partnerships, stating: “Taiwan views academic collaboration as the backbone of our international outreach. Through platforms like this conference, which celebrates our shared traditions and technological advancements, we are building genuine, people-to-people connections that truly define soft power.”

The conference will continue its detailed exploration of traditions and technological innovations defining the modern India-Taiwan relationship over the coming days.
