Dibrugarh to Host First International School Badminton Championship and Coaching Camp

Dibrugarh is set to make sporting history as it prepares to host the first-ever International School Badminton Championship and Youth International Badminton Coaching Camp from December 22, 2025 to January 6, 2026 at the Multipurpose Indoor Sports Hall.

This landmark event, organised by the Office of the District Sports Officer and sanctioned by the Sports and Youth Welfare Department, Government of Assam, marks a significant milestone in promoting badminton across the region and the nation.

The International Badminton Coaching Camp will run from December 22, 2025 to January 2, 2026, bringing together aspiring young players to receive expert training and guidance from experienced international coaches. Following this, the 1st International Inter-School Badminton Championship will commence with qualifying rounds from December 31, 2025 to January 2, 2026, whilst the main rounds are scheduled from January 3 to 6, 2026.

The tournament will feature school-level players competing in various age categories, including Under-11, Under-14, Under-17 and Under-19 singles competitions for both boys and girls.

Organisers highlighted the event’s potential to identify and nurture young talent whilst providing valuable international exposure to local players.

“This event can help increase the popularity of badminton in the region and encourage more people to take up sports. The championship can serve as a platform for identifying talented young players who may go on to represent India in future badminton tournaments,” said an official from the District Sports Office.

Dibrugarh has already produced notable international badminton players, including Isharani Baruah, who achieved a career-high BWF World Ranking of 60, and Ningshi Block Hazarika, who represented Team India at the Senior World Championship in Nanjing, China, in 2018.

The coaching camp will feature training sessions from 5am to 6am, 8am to 11am, and 4pm to 7pm daily, with a sightseeing programme scheduled for January 1, 2026. All participating campers will compete directly in the main championship rounds.
