Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday launched a comprehensive digital and civic initiative, setting an ambitious target for Dibrugarh to become one of India’s cleanest cities by emulating the renowned model of Indore.
Sonowal, who is the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, Waterways and also the Dibrugarh MP, issued the call for a collective effort during a key meeting of the Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC). He highlighted the city’s status as Assam’s projected second capital and stressed the need to make it a benchmark for cleanliness and greenery.

To understand the winning formula firsthand, a delegation from the DMC will soon visit Indore, which has retained its title as India’s cleanest city for eight consecutive years. The city’s success is widely credited to robust public participation, highly efficient waste management systems, and the innovative use of technology under the Swachh Survekshan initiative.
In a major step toward modernising governance, Sonowal officially launched the DMC’s new website (https://dmcdibrugarh.in/). This digital platform is designed to make civic services more accessible and user-friendly, ensuring quicker resolution of public grievances.

The Union Minister directed authorities to undertake a drain-cleaning drive across all 22 wards of the city during the winter to prevent monsoon waterlogging.
The meeting also focused on broader development issues, including infrastructure, transparency, and health systems. State Power Minister and Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan announced plans to install a high-tech, state-of-the-art incinerator. This facility will scientifically manage biomedical waste from the Assam Medical College and Hospital and 34 private nursing homes in the city.
The meeting was attended by Mayor Dr Saikat Patra, Deputy Mayor Ujjal Phukon, DMC Commissioner Jay Vikas, and all ward councillors.
