Debabrata Saikia Condemns Government Over Brahmaputra Erosion and Administrative Failures

Congress MLA and leader of the opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, on Friday raised serious concerns over severe erosion caused by the Brahmaputra River in Dibrugarh’s Maijan area, whilst launching a sharp criticism of the state government’s handling of multiple critical issues.

Addressing a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan in Dibrugarh, Saikia expressed alarm over the relentless erosion that has plagued the region for years.

“The Maijan area in Dibrugarh has been shrinking day by day due to massive erosion happening in the area for the last several years. The government has completely failed to stop the erosion of the river Brahmaputra,” Saikia said.

The opposition leader also highlighted recurring waterlogging problems in Dibrugarh, which has caused immense hardship to residents during the monsoon season.

“Every year Dibrugarh has been facing waterlogging and people have to face huge problems during monsoon, but the government has failed to solve the issue. The Himanta Biswa Sarma-led BJP government claims many things, but in reality they don’t do anything,” he stated.

Beyond the erosion crisis, Saikia raised concerns over what he described as deepening political, social and administrative instability under the present Assam government. He accused the ruling dispensation of governance failures, unfulfilled electoral promises and adopting divisive approaches.

Highlighting administrative gaps, Saikia pointed to numerous vacancies across government departments, particularly in health and education sectors. He accused the government of deliberately delaying recruitment processes, disrupting essential public services.

Saikia expressed concern over what he termed a visible decline in government-run health and education systems, alleging that poor planning and stalled recruitment have hindered progress, leaving the public to bear the consequences.

The Congress leader also criticised what he called the ruling party’s deliberate political attacks and attempts at creating social divisions, stressing that harmony must be prioritised over polarisation.

Calling for immediate corrective measures, Saikia urged for a transparent and accountable system to restore public trust.

“The future direction of Assam depends on the decisions taken today. A united, people-centred approach is essential to bring back stability, harmony and development,” he concluded.
