Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya Visits Dhemaji

Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya arrived in Dhemaji district on Thursday morning, marking his first official visit to the region since assuming office. Traveling by the Lachit Express from Guwahati, the Governor reached Dhemaji Railway Station at around 5.45 am, where he received a warm welcome from officials, dignitaries, and residents.

District Commissioner Rahul Suresh Javir and Senior Superintendent of Police Hitesh Chandra Roy were present at the railway station to greet the Governor. Locals lined up to catch a glimpse of the visiting dignitary, and the atmosphere turned festive as district officials and cultural groups extended a traditional welcome.

After alighting from the train, Governor Acharya interacted with the citizens and exchanged greetings with several well-wishers who had gathered at the station. Many residents took photographs with him, capturing the rare moment of a gubernatorial visit to the border district.

Speaking briefly at the station, the Governor expressed gratitude for the warm reception. “It is a privilege to visit Dhemaji and meet the wonderful people here,” Acharya said.

Following his arrival, Governor Acharya proceeded to the office of the District Commissioner, where he chaired a meeting focused on flood protection and erosion control measures. The meeting was attended by senior district officials, engineers, and representatives of the water resources department. Discussions centered on the recurring flood problems faced by Dhemaji — one of the most flood-affected districts in Assam — and on the progress of embankment strengthening projects underway in the region.

“The welfare of people living in flood-prone areas is a top priority for the administration. It is essential to combine timely infrastructure development with effective community preparedness,” the Governor said.

Later, Governor Acharya visited the Jiadhal river area to inspect the ongoing embankment construction work upstream of the Samarajan Bridge. He reviewed the progress of protective measures being implemented to contain river erosion and mitigate the impact of seasonal floods. Engineers briefed him about the current status of works under various state and central government schemes.

In the afternoon, the Governor attended the “Setubandhan” programme at the Dhemaji Public Auditorium. The event, organised to strengthen community-government coordination, saw participation from local residents, officials, and representatives of civic bodies. Governor Acharya interacted with attendees and appreciated their teamwork and dedication to local development.

The Governor’s visit concluded with informal exchanges and discussions with local groups on issues of connectivity, education, and rural development. His visit is expected to give fresh impetus to the district’s ongoing infrastructure and flood management efforts.
