The second phase of the ‘Biswas Yatra’ bike rally, a major statewide awareness campaign focused on women’s safety, dignity, and empowerment, commenced on Monday. The rally was flagged off from the Assam State Commission for Women (ASCW) state office in Guwahati, with ASCW Chairperson and popular actor Angoorlata Deka personally leading the convoy of women riders on her bike towards Nalbari.

The high-profile rally is designed to connect governmental policy with grassroots reality, spreading the message of legal rights and available welfare schemes across the state.

Upon arriving in Nalbari, Deka immediately held a crucial review meeting with the district administration to assess the local implementation of women-centric initiatives.

The meeting, held in the presence of Nalbari District Commissioner Nibedan Das Patowary, Senior Superintendent of Police Bibekananda Das, and ASCW member Nilima Brahma, thoroughly reviewed all aspects of women’s security, the execution of government schemes, and adherence to women’s rights. The focus remained squarely on strengthening local mechanisms for protection and dignity.

Addressing the assembled officials, Deka acknowledged a major legislative push by the state government, offering praise to the Chief Minister.

“I must express my sincere thanks to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for taking a strong step by tabling and passing the ‘Assam Polygamy Prohibition Act 2025’ on the floor of the Assam Legislative Assembly,” Deka stated.

The review meeting concluded with several actionable decisions aimed at collectively enhancing the protection and empowerment of every woman in the Nalbari district in the days to come.

Crucially, the success of the ‘Biswas Yatra’ is contingent upon the collaboration of grassroots workers, whom Deka recognised as the backbone of the movement. She highlighted that the direct or indirect cooperation of “our hope workers, Anganwadi workers, Jeevika Sakhi, Nyaya Sakhi of the courts, Panchayat representatives, Zilla Parishad representatives, and active women engaged in social service” is what will actualise women’s equality and protection on the ground.

Following the administrative session, Deka participated in a public awareness session at the Nalbari District Library Auditorium, where she exchanged views with conscious citizens and experienced women’s community members who contribute across social, political, and educational fields. The Commission noted the diverse opinions to inform future strategies for serving the cause of equality and protection of women in the region.
