AMCH Achieves Landmark Success with Minimal-Access Open-Heart Surgery

Assam Medical College & Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh has marked a transformative milestone in regional healthcare by successfully performing a complex open-heart surgery using advanced minimal-access cardiac techniques—a groundbreaking achievement that sets a new standard for sophisticated cardiac care in Upper Assam.

The pioneering procedure, conducted by a multidisciplinary team led by the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) on November 15, involved repairing an Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), a congenital heart condition. The surgical team employed cutting-edge methods including cold blood cardioplegia, utilising the state-of-the-art facilities at the Superspeciality Block. Hospital authorities confirmed that the patient, 48-year-old Bandita Bawari, is stable and receiving comprehensive postoperative care.

AMCH Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent Dr Sanjeeb Kakati praised the exceptional coordination and dedication displayed throughout the procedure. He recognized the outstanding contributions of CTVS surgeons, the anaesthesiology unit, perfusionists, technical specialists, and nursing staff for executing this high-stakes cardiac intervention with remarkable precision.

“This successful surgery exemplifies AMCH’s growing expertise in routinely managing advanced cardiac procedures,” Dr Kakati stated. “Our enhanced infrastructure and sophisticated diagnostic capabilities now enable us to provide world-class cardiac surgical services within the region.”

He stressed the broader healthcare impact of this achievement. “This accomplishment will substantially minimise the necessity for patients from Upper Assam to seek specialised cardiac treatment outside the state, saving them considerable expense and hardship,” Dr Kakati said.

The minimal-access approach represents a significant advancement in cardiac surgery, offering patients reduced surgical trauma, shorter recovery periods, and improved cosmetic outcomes compared to traditional open-heart procedures.
