AGP Showcases Strength in Chabua Rally, Vows to Strengthen Regionalism for State’s Future

The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), the state’s main regional party and a key component of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), on Friday held a massive public rally (Sankalp Samavesh) at Dinjoy Tea Estate in Chabua, Dibrugarh. With an estimated 20,000 party workers and supporters in attendance, the rally served as the official sounding of the poll bugle for the party ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.

The rally brought together the party’s top brass, showcasing a unified front. Prominent attendees included AGP President and Cabinet Minister Atul Bora, Working President and Cabinet Minister Keshab Mahanta, Lok Sabha MP Phanibhushan Choudhury, Rajya Sabha MP Birendra Prasad Baishya, and MLAs Punakon Baruah, Bhabendranath Bharali, AGP vice president Sunil Rajkonwar and other party leaders.

Addressing the massive gathering, AGP President Atul Bora delivered a passionate speech centred on revitalising regional pride and securing the state’s interests.

“The strengthening of the Asom Gana Parishad in the heart of Assam means the strengthening of regionalism, and the strengthening of regionalism means the safeguarding of the interests of the Assamese nation,” Bora said. He stated that the massive turnout at the rally was proof that “regionalism is always alive.”

Bora underlined the party’s historic commitment to the people saying, “The Asom Gana Parishad is a party built with the blood of the people. We called upon everyone in the assembly to continue their dedicated service in proudly upholding the banner of progressive nationalism of the Asom Gana Parishad to protect the self-respect and interests of the Assamese people. With everyone’s dedicated service, we can achieve our desired goals.”

With the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections looming, the core message of the rally was the need for organisational preparation and grassroots expansion.

“Today, by participating in the Sankalp Samavesh in the Chabua-Lahowal constituency, we all collectively renewed our resolve to revitalise and advance the Assam Gana Parishad with renewed vigour in the coming days for a secure future of Assam,” Bora told the enthusiastic crowd. He urged everyone present to strengthen the party’s organisational base by increasing public outreach and swiftly advancing all party activities.

The AGP president used the rally to signal a strong stance for the upcoming alliance discussions with the BJP. Noting that the AGP had secured nine seats in the previous Assam Assembly polls, Bora announced that the party would be seeking an increased number of seats during the seat-sharing negotiations with its senior NDA partner. The AGP’s success in the past election and its revitalised grassroots efforts are expected to form the basis of its demand in the pre-poll talks, the party positions itself for a greater role in the next government.

AGP working president and Cabinet Minister Keshab Mahanta announced that land pattas for tea tribe workers would be issued soon, crediting Dinjoy Tea Estate owner Mrigendra Jalan for voluntarily handing over land for workers’ lines to the government, expediting the process.
