Nandalal Borgohain City College Hosts National Seminar 

The Department of Anthropology, Nandalal Borgohain City College, Dibrugarh, organised a day-long national seminar on “Cultural Continuity in a Changing India: Challenges and Prospects,” in collaboration with Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya (IGRMS), Bhopal, drawing experts, scholars, and students from across Assam for a vibrant exchange of ideas.

The seminar, held on November 8, featured noted resource persons including Dr Mohan Lal Goyal of IGRMS, Dr Debashish Bora of DDR College, Chabua, and Dr Bhaskar Das and Dr Deep Gogoi of DHSK College, Dibrugarh. The main lecture was delivered by Dr Jonali Devi, former professor from Cotton University.

“The customs and traditions that define us need to be preserved through adaptive strategies. Genuine continuity happens when our culture embraces the future while honouring the past,” she said.

The Chief Guest, Dr Nitul Kumar Gogoi, Head of the Department of Anthropology at Dibrugarh University, highlighted the significance of such academic inquiries, stating, “Understanding the challenges to cultural continuity is crucial in shaping the social fabric of a diverse nation like India. It is through constructive dialogues that scholars and students can discover solutions for the challenges we face.”

Principal Dr Sanjibananda Borgohain of Nandalal Borgohain City College expressed pride in hosting the prestigious event, asserting, “Our responsibility is to encourage young minds to contribute to the advancement of anthropology and cultural studies. Events like this create opportunities for learning and collaboration.”

The seminar witnessed robust participation, with as many as 60 research papers submitted—40 in English and 20 in Assamese—by students and scholars, demonstrating the collective commitment to exploring cultural dynamics in contemporary India. Certificates were distributed to participants by Dr Borgohain and Dr Goyal of IGRMS.

Niranjan Borah, Head of the Anthropology Department anchored the proceedings. 

“Such platforms inspire meaningful academic dialogue and help promote appreciation for cultural heritage and scientific research among students,” Borah said.

The seminar concluded with a renewed focus on sustaining cultural values for future generations amidst ongoing change and modernisation.
