The misty hills of Khonsa in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap district pulsed with songs, dance, and ancestral rhythms as the 57th Chalo Loku Festival, one of the most cherished harvest festivals in Arunachal Pradesh, unfolded at the Loku ground on Tuesday. Marking the close of the paddy harvest and the beginning of new Jhum cultivation, the three-day celebration drew tribal troupes from Kheti, Hukan, and Chasa villages, their colourful attire and spirited folk performances captivating more than 100 foreign tourists amid the lively local gathering.
Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein and MLA Wanglin Lowangdong attended the festivities, joining elders, youth, and cultural ambassadors as traditional rituals and log drum beats echoed through the valley. Mein released two books—‘Miles Bronson and His Works Among the Noctes’ by Wangtum Lowang and the festival souvenir ‘Odyssey’, edited by Denhang Bosai. The unveiling of the Nocte Traditional Shawl and two music albums, ‘Jovi Din’ and ‘Oni Nina’, added vibrancy and pride to the occasion.

Originating from three Nocte words—Cha (paddy), Lo (season), and Loku (festival)—Chalo Loku is not merely an agricultural festival, it is a heartfelt prayer of gratitude to nature and the divine for the season’s bounty, a tradition that remains essential to Nocte identity. The festival ensures ancient agricultural practices and spiritual beliefs endure amid rapid modernisation, binding generations through shared customs.
“The 57th Central Chalo Loku Festival at Khonsa beautifully showcased our unity and rich heritage. From soulful Rangtam rituals to vibrant log drum beats, the celebration is a living tradition binding generations,” Mein said, celebrating the vibrant scene.

Mein reflected on rapid local progress. “Eastern Arunachal is transforming. Distinct ST recognition for Nocte, Wancho, Tutsa, and Tangsa restores pride. New tourist circuits and World War II commemoration will put our region on the map. The Namchik–Namphuk coal mine boosts growth, and the Vibrant Village Programme brings new opportunities. Chalo Loku echoes our identity, resilience, and prosperity,” he stated.
